Dragon Age: Origins Hints

General Boss Monster Combat Tips

  • 1 of 9: The first thing to do is prepare for the boss combat before it starts. If you can, go to a merchant to sell off junk and buy useful items, and have an enchanter equip your weapons with the best magic runes you've got.
  • 2 of 9: Right before the boss combat starts, buff up with useful spells and items. For instance, if you're about to fight a fire-breathing dragon, use items like Greater Warmth Balms that increase your resistance to fire.
  • 3 of 9: Pause the game as soon as the combat starts, then have everyone except your toughest character get ready to deliver ranged attacks via spells or bows. Those who will be using bows should equip the best magic arrows/bolts you have so they can do more damage per shot.
  • 4 of 9: Toggle full-party selection and right-click on the boss monster to target it, then unpause the game. Your tough melee guy should run toward the boss while everyone else starts pelting it with ranged attacks.
  • 5 of 9: Click on your melee guy's portrait to select only him, then run him around near the boss to keep its attention away from everyone else. You'll have to stay fairly close to it and attack it periodically to keep it from running after the others.
  • 6 of 9: It will sooner or later (probably sooner) go after your ranged-fire characters, at which time you'll need to run them around so they won't get overwhelmed. It's a good idea to spread them out soon after the combat begins so the boss can't hit more than one at a time with area-of-effect attacks.
  • 7 of 9: If your spellcaster knows some spells that can paralyze or disorient the boss, switch to him every now and then to make sure he casts them. Watch his mana line and have him use lyrium potions when he runs low.
  • 8 of 9: Also, make sure your healer mage (if you have one) keeps everyone healed, especially whoever's currently being pounded by the boss. If you don't have a healer with you, have your characters use health poultices whenever their health gets low.
  • 9 of 9: If the boss has minions or summoned allies, things will get more complicated. You'll often have to switch your focus to the lesser enemies, and keeping everyone healed will be harder.
