Quest-Related Encounters

  • These encounters can only happen when certain quest conditions are true, like after a certain quest is finished in a certain way.

    * Camp: After you finish some of the treaty quests, you'll get an encounter where your party camp is attacked by shrieks. After you kill them all, exit the camp and travel somewhere, then return to the camp to find that it's back to normal.

    * The Crater: You can get this encounter after you finish any of the four main treaty quests. (I usually got it while traveling to Flemeth's hut after finishing the Redcliffe treaty quests.) Watch the brief Superman rip-off cut-scene, then raid the pile of ore in the crater to get a chunk of meteor metal ore. I've heard that you can get a blacksmith to craft it into a weapon if you have the Warden's Keep module, but I haven't been able to verify that.

    * Deserted Farmland: If your main character is not a human noble, and you finished the Ostagar optional quest "The Mabari Hound," you should get this encounter when you travel to Lothering for the first time. The dog will run toward you, chased by a bunch of hurlocks. Kill them off to get the dog to become a new party member, then look around for elfroot and deathroot plants.

    * Forest Clearing: This encounter can only happen while traveling to a forest location after finishing the Dalish treaty quest. A bunch of werewolves, including a ranked werewolf alpha, surround and attack you. After you kill them all, search the area for an elfroot and two deathroot plants, plus a campfire with a charred corpse and wooden crate next to it.

    * Forest Incline: You can get this encounter after finishing the dwarf treaty quests. A band of rebel dwarves, including several well-placed archers, will attack you. After they're down, look around to find a deathroot plant.

    * Lakeside Road: This encounter can happen after you finish the mage treaty quests if you sided with the templars. Some templars are being overwhelmed by undead, including a powerful abomination. Start killing off undead right away, since the templars will soon fall, leaving only you for the undead to focus on. After you finish them off, watch out for poison gas trap triggers while searching the area for three bloody corpses to loot. (There are also two deathroot plants, but both are impossible to reach.)

    * The Long Road: You can get this encounter after you finish any of the four main treaty quests. Move forward to get a woman to talk to you and run off, then harvest the nearby elfroot plant. Follow the woman until you can see a group of people ahead, but don't approach them right away. Try to get your rogue to detect and disarm some nearby traps first. When you get close enough, the travelers will turn hostile and attack. After you beat them all, you'll get a cut-scene in which you can get Zevran to become a follower. Check the area for traps to disarm, then loot the two crates and two deathroot plants. Also, search the dead travelers to find a special letter on one of them that has to do with the Denerim optional quest "Friends of Red Jenny."

    * Roadside: This encounter can happen after you finish the mage treaty quests if you sided with the mages. A group of mages on a small hill start attacking a group of hurlocks. Rush to the attack, but don't let any hurlocks get past you and approach the mages. After the battle is over, check the mages' hill for a deathroot plant.

    * Roadside Field: This encounter can happen after you finish the Redcliffe treaty quests. You'll find several Redcliffe soldiers fighting darkspawn (including an ogre), so rush to their aid. After the battle is over, search the area for three knight corpses, a bloody corpse, and three elfroot plants.

    * Rocky Road: You can only get this encounter if you finish the Dalish treaty quests by getting an elf army. You'll find some elves behind barricades under attack by a bunch of darkspawn, including shrieks. Hit them with your best area-of-effect attacks, then rush in and finish them off. After it's over, look around for two bloody corpses and two elfroot plants.

    * Steep Path: This encounter can happen after you finish the mage treaty quests if you sided with the templars. A greater rage demon and a bunch of flaming servants will attack you. There are several explosive fire traps between you and the demon, so hang back and thrash his servants, then try to take him down with ranged attacks. After it's over, look for an offering chest and two deathroot plants to raid.

    * Twisted Forest: This encounter can happen while traveling to a forest area after finishing the Dalish treaty quest. You'll be attacked by four of the "wild sylvan" tree monsters at once. This can be tough due to the sylvans' immobilizing root attacks, so hit them with spells and ranged damage as much as you can. After they're dead, look for three deathroot plants.

    * Winding Road: You can get this encounter after finishing the dwarf treaty quests. Several dwarves are under attack by darkspawn (including two ogres), so help them kill the fiends off. Search the area after the battle to find two bloody corpses and a deathroot plant.

    * Wooded Highway: This encounter only happens after you finish the Dalish treaty quest by allying with the werewolves against the elves. You'll find several werewolves under attack by darkspawn, including three ogres. You probably can't save any of the werewolves, so concentrate on keeping your own characters alive, and don't hesitate to use area-of-effect spells on darkspawn while they're still distracted by werewolves. After the battle is over, look around for three darkspawn corpses and an elfroot plant.
