Dragon Age: Origins Hints
Denerim Random Encounters
NOTE: Due to the difficulty of these random encounters (especially the second one), you should always quicksave before traveling in Denerim if you don't have a strong party.
* Back Alley (must have pickpocketed people in Denerim): A whole bunch of soldiers attack you after their leader briefly talks to you. Run to the area's NE corner and thrash all the soldiers that follow you there, then go get the rest of them (or try to lure them to you with ranged attacks). After you finish that encounter, you can get another one just like it, even if you don't pickpocket anyone else.
* Back Alley: At the start of this area is a glass phylactery next to some crates. Right-click on the phylactery and take the vial to get a powerful revenant to appear nearby and attack. After it's defeated and looted, go over to the large open gate to the east, and make sure everyone in your party walks a tiny bit past the gate before anyone goes very far past it. It'll close behind you, and several rogues will attack. (If someone is trapped on the other side of the gate, look for a lever just to the east of it that you can use to reopen the gate.) After the battle, loot the wooden crate and locked chest on the small wooden-plank platform.
* Back Alley: Several bandits will attack when you approach the large archway that's east of where you appear. Watch out for the tripwire across the archway that sets off fiery traps. After the battle, look for two chests to loot in the main area, one of which is locked.
* Back Alley (after Part 4 of the game starts): The first time you try to travel between locations in Denerim, this encounter will come up. Look to the left for a locked chest to loot, then move toward the stairs to talk to Taliesen. If Zevran isn't in your party, he'll show up for the conversation. If your approval rating with Zevran is high enough, he'll help you fight the assassins. Otherwise, he'll join them in attacking you. Move your party a ways east at the start of combat to avoid the many traps near the stairs. After combat is over, have your rogue disarm all the traps, then loot the assassins and the wooden crate that's past the stairs.
