Dragon Age: Origins Hints

Broodmother Combat Tips

  • 1 of 9: The broodmother can't move at all, but she has lots of hit points, can spit damaging gunk at you, and is protected by four powerful tentacles which can change location. Sounds bad, but there's a pretty easy way to deal with it all.
  • 2 of 9: Start by taking control of the entire party and running them up the stone ramp that's to the left of the broodmother. Once at the end of it, nothing can reach you except the broodmother's accursed spit, which can magically travel through solid stone.
  • 3 of 9: Use poultices and/or spells to keep your characters healed while attacking the four tentacles at range. Get rid of them as quickly as you can, but note that you haven't destroyed them yet -- they'll be back later.
  • 4 of 9: After the tentacles disappear, run everyone down to where they have line-of-sight with the broodmother so that you can range-attack her. Spells like Tempest and Blizzard (especially both together) can really hurt the old fatso.
  • 5 of 9: After she takes enough damage, the tentacles will reappear, and so will several hurlocks and genlocks. Run your party back up the stone ramp and trash the darkspawn who are there, then wait for the others to come to you. (Note that you'll probably want to switch most or all of your characters back to melee weapons for this.)
  • 6 of 9: When they're all down, toss some more area-of-effect spells at the broodmother and/or her tentacles, then use ranged attacks to get rid of the tentacles again.
  • 7 of 9: When the broodmother is once again alone, go down to where everyone can target her with ranged attacks and damage her until she gets more help from tentacles and darkspawn.
  • 8 of 9: As before, run everyone back up the stone ramp and kill darkspawn from there. Some of them may have bows, so you'll need to kill them with your own bows (and spells).
  • 9 of 9: If you've been hitting the broodmother with Tempest and Blizzard regularly, she and her tentacles should die pretty soon.
