Dragon Age II Hints

How can I get through the starting combats?

  • 1 of 9: After a cut-scene, you'll find yourself and your sister Bethany (or your brother Carver, if you're a mage) under attack by a small group of darkspawn.
  • 2 of 9: This starting section of the game is just a combat tutorial, so follow the on-screen prompts to explore the activated abilities for your chosen character class. (But note that you won't have all of those starting abilities for long.)
  • 3 of 9: Another good combat tip is to pause the game after each kill so you can rotate your view and see what's happening on the battlefield. That'll help you decide where to go and what to attack next. Also, pausing during an attack on a target will give you time to look over your available abilities and decide which if any you want to use.
  • 4 of 9: After you finish off the starting hurlock attack, you'll get a brief conversation during which a few more hurlocks show up. You can either kill them yourself or let your sibling do it. Since it all happens during the conversation, it doesn't make any difference.
  • 5 of 9: When the conversation is over, you'll be attacked by a large group of hurlocks that approach from different directions. Stay close to your sibling and use all of your abilities as frequently as you can to put them all down.
  • 6 of 9: When the last one dies, a darkspawn ogre and a few more hurlocks will show up. Focus on the ogre and use all of your abilities to the max to take it down. For instance, warriors will want to charge the ogre with their Scythe ability, then hit it with Mighty Blow. Hack the ogre until those abilities are available again, then repeat. (Also use Whirlwind and Tremor when hurlocks are near the ogre.)
  • 7 of 9: After the ogre is killed, you'll get a cut-scene followed by options for customizing your character. Note that what you select for "Events of Dragon Age: Origins" will affect not only in-game references to that earlier game, but also some minor quests. If you don't have a save to import, you might as well stay with the default history "Hero of Fereldan."
  • 8 of 9: When you choose to start the game, you'll be prompted to select your difficulty level. This can be changed later, so what you choose now doesn't really matter. However, anyone who hasn't played through the game before and found combats to be too easy should stick with the Normal difficulty setting.
  • 9 of 9: Following another cut-scene and a brief conversation with your family members, you'll get the "The Destruction of Lothering" quest, plus any quests that go along with premium content you may have installed.
