Dragon Age II Hints
Find a way past the darkspawn horde.
of 10: Go a short way down the path to find a dead refugee to loot. There's another dead refugee a bit farther down, but going that way will cause hurlocks to attack from two directions.
of 10: After the combat is over, you'll be able to level up. Do so, then loot the other dead refugee before moving on down the path to find more hurlocks to kill. After you finish them off, more will attack following a cut-scene, though they'll be preoccupied with Wesley and Aveline.
of 10: After a conversation with them, check to see if anyone can level up, then use the "Highlight usable objects" key to see if any of the fallen hurlocks have loot on them. This is something you need to remember to do from now on after every combat.
of 10: Move on down the path to find another dead refugee and more hurlocks to fight. This is the first real multi-wave combat of the game, so expect more hurlocks to appear after you finish off most of the first ones, even though there's no cut-scene in between.
of 10: After a third small group of hurlocks is put down, move on to find another dead refugee and (guess what?) more hurlocks right nearby to fight. Watch for a second wave to appear behind you, then a third wave back near where the first ones were. Thankfully, the second and third waves are smaller than the first.
of 10: Look in a small side area where the first wave was for some rubble to loot, then move on to find another dead refugee. Quicksave right after looting that one, since the next hurlock combat will include a spellcasting emissary apprentice. You'll want to go after him first, then finish off the rest of the hurlocks, including the second and third waves.
of 10: See if you can level up again after that, then check your map to see that there's a side area to the south. Explore it to find two dead refugees, a codex-giving item, and a locked chest. (Note that you can only open the locked chest if you made your character a rogue, since none of your current companions are rogues.)
of 10: When you enter the large open area to the west, you'll be attacked by an ogre, and one of your siblings will die during the cut-scene. After it's over, you'll have to fight the ogre and his supporting darkspawn. (They really hit us with this early in the game this time, didn't they?)
of 10: After the ogre and all of the hurlock reinforcements go down, there'll be a cut-scene about your fallen sibling, then more hurlocks will attack from all directions. Fortunately, you'll only have to kill a few of them before Flemeth shows up in dragon form and roasts the rest.
of 10: Talk to Flemeth and accept her task, then either tell Aveline that Wesley's fate is up to her to increase your friendship with her, or decide his fate yourself to increase your rivalry with her. After that's done and some more cut-scenes play, you'll get the next objective.
