Dragon Age II Hints
Go to Ser Varnell's daytime rally near Darktown to confirm Petrice's ....
of 8: Travel to the Ser Varnell's Refuge region that's now on the Kirkwall Day map.
of 8: Go up the stairs in the first room, then look for a locked chest around the corner to the left. Have your rogue disarm the trap in front of the chest before he opens it.
of 8: Enter the second room to start a dialogue with Ser Varnell, during which you can attack him or try to convince him that you're on his side.
of 8: To side with Ser Varnell, tell him to go ahead and kill the qunari hostages, and then use the "here's your proof" dialogue option -- which will only be available if you've been using mostly aggressive dialogue options in the past.
of 8: If you side with Varnell, the remaining qunari hostages will break free and attack. The Templars will engage them, so you can just stay back and offer ranged support at first. However, watch for two waves of qunari reinforcements to appear as the battle progresses.
of 8: If you attack Varnell, he and his numerous fanatics will turn hostile and attack you. Hit them with some area-of-effect spells, then put your warrior on Varnell while your companions finish off the fanatics. After the initial crowd is taken care of, two more large waves of fanatics will appear.
of 8: When the combat is finally over, the quest will end with a conversation with the viscount in which you advise him as to whether or not to burn the dead qunari to hide the torture. (Note that burning them gets you a side quest, but loses you respect with the Arishok.)
of 8: TIP: Look around for loot before you go, including a crate with a companion gift item in it. Also, go tell the Arishok what happened to (possibly) gain some respect with him.
