Dragon Age II Hints
Is there any particular benefit to either payment option?
1 of 3: Not really. If you pay Bartrand out of your own money, you'll get 50 gold at the start of Act II as your share of the expedition profits. If you arrange for Dougal to pay Bartrand for you, he'll be paid back out of expedition profits in Act II. (He'll show up at your estate and demand more gold from you, but you don't have to give him any.)
2 of 3: What you should do is visit all the various stores in Kirkwall and the Dalish camp and see if there's anything you want to buy. Priority items would include backpacks, companion armor upgrades, and items that can give you extra attribute or ability points. (See the Backpack List, Companion Armor Upgrade List, and Tome and Elixir List.)
3 of 3: If you still have 50 gold or more after buying everything you want, pay Bartrand. Otherwise, go see Dougal.
