Guard Combat Tips
1 of 6: The guards are all total wimps, but there are a lot of them.
2 of 6: As soon as the combat starts, pause the game and use Varric's Hail of Arrows ability to quickly kill off most of the guards that are directly ahead of you.
3 of 6: Use normal crossbow attacks to finish off the other nearby guards, then start looking for some more to appear on the stairs and in doorways.
4 of 6: Activate Varric's Speed ability, then rapidly shoot guards down as they appear, pausing the game whenever you need to rotate your view to find more targets.
5 of 6: If you find your starting position to be too exposed, you can run around to the SE corner room or some other room that has only one door. That'll ensure you can only be attacked from one direction.
6 of 6: There will be occasional pauses in combat where you'll be able to stand and heal, but don't go anywhere -- more guards will come after you eventually (until the cut-scene that marks the end of the combat, that is).
