Dreamfall: The Longest Journey Hints
Can you give me any help with the controls?
While the original The Longest Journey was designed as a point-and-click adventure game for the PC, Dreamfall was apparently designed first as an Xbox game, with controls to match. The PC version of Dreamfall includes several control options, but the gamepad is by far the best option if you have a gamepad handy and are even remotely used to using one. This is becoming true of more and more adventure games -- so if you're having a really tough time with the controls, you may find it worth the investment to buy a gamepad or just borrow one long enough to finish the game. (Of course, Xbox gamers only have one option, which is the gamepad.)
NOTE: Gamepad controls on the PC may vary slightly depending from what I've described in these hints, but you can always go into the game menu to view the exact settings. I believe these hints give the correct default settings for Xbox versions of the game, but I haven't played the Xbox version myself to verify 100%.
Either way, the main way that you interact with the world -- aside from a few combat sequences and mini-games -- is via the action icon(s) that appear in the bottom-right corner of the screen. Pretty much any time I use a verb in the hints (if I say to look at something, open it, climb it, etc.), I mean that you need to select the corresponding action icon. What icon(s) are available will depend on the object -- or even what you've done with it. Common icons are an eye (to look at the item) or a hand (to use it), and sometimes, you will need to look at something before you can use it. Occasionally, you'll get other options, like an icon for climbing or pushing an object.
If you're using a mouse, you will generally see a single icon in the lower-right corner of the screen. This means that you should left-click with your mouse. Depending on how many actions are available, you character may do that action, or a pop-up menu with multiple icons may appear in the center of the screen. If the pop-up menu does appear, simply move your mouse and click to select the appropriate icon. On a gamepad, the action icons will appear in a diamond shape in the lower right-corner, which is aligned the same way as your gamepad buttons. Simply press the corresponding one -- for example, A on the Xbox for the bottom (default) icon.
I also recommend that mouse users go into the game's main menu to tweak several options. Select the options, then under the "Game" tab, select "Inverted" for the "Camera Horizontal Axis" and perhaps the vertical axis as well. What the game calls "inverted" is what seems more natural to me in terms of which way the mouse moves the camera. "Camera Behavior" should be set at "Normal", though.
For all the rest of the details, please read your manual or contact the publisher for support. I've tried to give some basic tips and keystrokes, but it's impractical to replicate the manual in full in these hints.
