Dreamfall: The Longest Journey Hints

What am I supposed to say when I get conversation choices?

  • 1 of 6: When you get to a point in a conversation where the game asks you to make a choice, you'll see several one- or two-word options on your screen.  Point your mouse or gamepad in the direction of those choices, and a more complete explanation of what your character will say appears.  You'll rarely see the exact wording of the next dialogue line, but you still should get a general idea of what will come next, in those cases where the single word isn't good enough to clue you in.
  • 2 of 6: For the most part, which options you pick in conversations will have very little bearing on the outcome of the game, or even on your immediate situation.  There are a few exceptions, but these will be covered in the appropriate hints.
  • 3 of 6: When you're trying to get information out of someone and have multiple topics to choose from (along the lines of "Tell me more about...") odds are pretty good that once you've asked about one topic, you'll have a chance to go back and cover all the rest later.  (Sometimes, the conversation won't even end until you've covered all the topics -- but at the very least, you can talk to the person again if the first conversation ended prematurely.)
  • 4 of 6: And if it's a matter of choosing what sort of approach to take with the overall conversation -- like "aggressive" versus "passive" or "truth" versus "lie" -- many of these choices still won't matter.  One of the characters will steer the conversation back in the proper direction, so that the conversation ends the same way regardless of your initial choices.
  • 5 of 6: The only exceptions to these rules are cases where you're talking to someone who's obviously hostile to you.  In those cases, what you say may make the difference between getting out of the conversation safely and getting into a fight.  It's always a good idea to save your game into a new save slot every once in a while, but the game also tends to auto-save just before you get into any of these situations.  So it's rare that you'll lose much progress if you say the wrong thing and don't survive.
  • 6 of 6: In short, for the non-critical conversation choices, just say whatever you'd like to try.  The few critical conversations will be covered in hints specific to the particular puzzle.
