What is focus mode and how do I use it?
In some cases, you may need to use focus mode to solve a puzzle. Ordinarily, you can just walk up to an item, and the appropriate action icons will appear. However, when focus mode is active, you can sometimes act on items that are out of reach. First, enter focus mode by pressing the right mouse button. (On a gamepad, tap down the left analog stick.) You won't be able to move until you press the focus mode button again to exit, but trying to move your character with focus mode active will instead move the blue focus field that shows where your character is looking. Any item within the field that you can operate will be indicated with a colored frame. This occasionally lets you use items from a distance. Just use the appropriate action icon that appears once the item is "in focus".
When you're in focus mode, you can also select between multiple nearby items by pressing the appropriate button. Press Q or E on the keyboard (or use the triggers on your gamepad) to change which of the available items is highlighted, and thus, which item the action icons will operate on. Even if you're able to get within reach of an item, but several items are close to each other, using focus mode may help you to select a particular item.
