Duke Nukem 3D Hints

Can I play Duke Nukem 3D straight from the CD?

  • For those of you who are low on disk space, there's a neat way that you can play Duke Nukem 3D straight from the CD.  Install the game as normal, and then delete the main group file (DUKE3D.GRP).  Now, create a batch file that says this:

    DUKE3D /GD:\DN3DINST\DUKE3D.GRP

This assumes that your CD letter is D:.  If not, changes the D after the /G to your drive letter.  Instead of reading the group file that would be on your hard drive, it reads it from the CD.  This, of course, means that you will need to have the CD in the drive when you play the game.  Note that you better have *at least* a double-spin CD drive if you do this, and a quad or hex is even better.  This should be a last resort for those of us who barely have the space to keep 30 megs of stuff on the hard drive!  The loading times will probably be somewhat longer, though.

If you want to use alternate map files or play Dukematch, you'll have to use the SETUP program with the same parameters.  So, it'd look like:

    SETUP /GD:\DN3DINST\DUKE3D.GRP
