Duke Nukem 3D Hints
Attacking your opponent
Be aggressive. If your opponent retreats then he is probably low on health or out of ammo. Don't give him a chance to get back to health! Pursue him and keep on firing! Even if you just have a pistol, if your opponent has no ammo then you will kick his @$$!
One mistake beginners make in any multiplayer 3D game is that they are played much differently than in single-player mode. Your enemy is actually human, so they can (hopefully) think and react better than the enemies can. They will also move much faster than the enemies, and do other nasty little things, like jumping. Also note that many strategies used in one player don't necessarily work. For instance, one main tactic in one-player mode is to run to the entrance of a room, aim and shoot a few of the baddies charging at you, then run away. This usually won't work very well in multiplayer.
Some weapons work better if you put the game on Mouse/Keyboard combination. This is the best way to fire an RPG, for instance, or tossing Pipebombs at a certain angle. However, for up-close weapons, I recommend using just the keyboard. Turning on crosshairs either way is a must.
In network games with 3 or more people, always listen for gunfire that you are not involved in. If some other people are duking it out somewhere, this is the best opportunity to open fire on them. DO NOT just run straight out and get mowed down in the crossfire. Go towards the sound until you can just see them, but try to hide around a corner or something. Sit where you are and use a Pistol, Shotgun or Ripper Cannon. The reason you should only use these weapons in a situation like this is so that they will not notice you, plus these weapons have great aim. They will think that YOUR shots are the OTHER PERSON'S shots. If they saw rockets or shink rays going buy (it is hard to hit at long distances anyway) then they will know that you are there.
It's usually a good idea to put on "Weapons Mode" with the 'W' key. This way, you can see what your enemy has. You can prepare for a barrage of RPG shots, or duck to avoid Ripper fire.
If you are a beginner to Dukematch, try to find an opponent with a slow computer. It's very aid hard to aim if you have a system that crawls (take it from me: I KNOW). So if your opponent can't aim because off the missed frames due to CPU speed, take advantage and blast the heck of him!
One useful trick that takes advantage of the aforementioned CPU problems, is to hide behind a corner, run forward slightly, then run back. If they have a slow computer, it will look like you ran in front of them, going into the next room, and probably did not see you run back. Chances are, they will follow what they thought they saw. Use the opportunity to sneak up on them. What a nasty way to ruin your opponents self-esteem!
