Duke Nukem 3D Hints

Setting traps

  • The developers obviously wanted some good Dukematch weapons in this game, so they created the Tripbomb.  The Tripbomb is both your friend and your enemy--use it wisely.

Obviously, the best way to use these is to set them in a place that they can't see them.  For instance, if there's a hole you fall down, plant one right at the bottom.  There's no avoiding THAT if they decide to jump down.

One good way to set traps is to put them in thin corridors.  When you encounter a corner, set one there.  That way, if your opponent is just running through the halls, then most likely, he'll turn right into the beams without seeing them, and go kaboom.

Another good way to set three Tripbombs in the same location, but at varying heights.  Jump to plant one, put another at eye-level, and duck for the last one.  There's absolutely no way to get past one of these traps unless they are disarmed by a pipebomb.

Yet another great place that you can stick a tripbomb is next to a swinging door.  Check out the "Swinging Door Trap Diagram" for information on how to do this.

Always be on the lookout for places where you can watch your opponent but he will not see you. You can easily monitor your opponent and activate the pipebombs at just the right second. A good place to do this is on the crate in the street in E1L1 (outside of the theater). Put all of your pipeboms on the crate (duck and then release so they will travel less distance) and then jetpack up into the room with the red lights, above the arcade. Just wait here and wait for your opponet to jump on the crate, which is the only way to access the roof if you don't have a jetpack.

Don't put bombs right out in the open.  It's just a waste.  Your enemies will probably see them, and know how to get around them.  Similarly, Tripbombs in water are dumb, since swimming around them is easy.

You can also use bombs to "protect" various items and weapons.  Put a whole bunch of them around, say, the Freezethrower, to make it difficult to get to.  Put multiple traps around, so it's harder to trip all of the bombs.

One of the nastiest tricks you can play with the Tripbomb is setting them up at a "respawn point" (where a player resurrects after they die).  If someone respawns there, there's no way that they can live.  However, this can backfire -- in case you die and come back in the line of a Tripbomb, well, that's not a good thing.

Putting Tripbombs on narrow ledges, in different directions, is a pretty good idea too.  Again, they are difficult to avoid and, if placed right, can be hard to destroy too.

One way to build a big death trap is to set a whole bunch of Tripbombs in one room, all at different angles and heights.  Put a Pipebomb close to one.  Hide, and when someone goes in, detonate the Pipebomb, which will start a chain reaction and make the whole room go up in a display of fireworks.  Oh yeah, and the poor sap who wandered in will probably be dead, too.
