What are some good Turret placements?
Don't place any kind of Turrets too close to your base. Leave about three squares between them and the closest structure in your base. This is especially true with Rocket Turrets, because they can usually miss hitting and enemy and end up damaging one of your buildings!
For some odd reason, the enemies LOVE to attack your Repair Facility. It's good to place a bunch of Turrets around here (not too close). Make sure to repair this often, too!
If you are lucky enough to come upon a mission where the enemy is on the same hunk of rock as you, build concrete blocks up to the base, and then build some Rocket Turrets. This will take care of any enemy units, providing you have enough Turrets. However, they won't attack enemy structures, so you'll still need to send guys up to attack the rest of the base (and watch out for enemy Turrets!).
