Jessica Plunkenstein and the Dusseldorf Conspiracy Hints

I hate mechanical puzzles, and I hate you.

  • 1 of 8: The goal here is to make all the lights the same color.
  • 2 of 8: Every time you press a button, that button toggles.  That means, if it's on, it turns off, and if it's off, it turns on.  Also, the buttons above, below, to the left, and to the right toggle.
  • 3 of 8: Well, what happens if you press a button that's all the way at the top?  What button is "up" from there?  It wraps around: the very bottom row is "above" the very top row.  Similarly, if you press a button on the very left side, the button on the very right side also toggles.
  • 4 of 8: To make all the lights the same color, there are several strategies.  First and foremost, just fiddle around.
  • 5 of 8: Second, try to make a checkerboard pattern.  From here, it's fairly easy to get all the lights out.
  • 6 of 8: Third, and this is the give-away....

If you press a button, and then press the buttons up, down, left, and right of that button, all of a sudden, the board looks exactly like it did before you pressed that button, except that first button is now off.
  • 7 of 8: So, you're looking at the board.  And you've got a bunch of lights lit up.  So, you choose one button that's already lit.  You press that button, then you press the buttons that are up, down, left, and right of that button, and now, you've got a board with one less light lit up than when you started.  So you go to the next light that's lit, and you press that button, and then you press the buttons that are up, down, left, and right of that button, and you've got one fewer light that's lit.

Repeat until done.  (Thanks to Ian Osmond for the explanation.)
  • 8 of 8: When you've solved the puzzle, the light will turn green.
