Getting Killed (READ THIS FIRST!)
Although the game manual is well above average quality, no mention whatsoever is made of the fact that your hero (Quickthorpe) can get killed, or obviously what to do if and when he does. In actual fact, he gets killed extremely frequently. It happens sometimes when you make a false move, or even occasionally when you choose an incorrect dialog reply.
It is not always obvious that he has been killed; sometimes he drowns; sometimes he is burnt to a frazzle or frozen to death; sometimes eaten up by some creature; but on some occasions, he just lies flat on the ground as if in a deep trance.
Occasionally you are lucky and are just flipped back a short step, but more often than not, you really die, and your mouse and general controls die with you! When this first happens you may get the false impression that the game has partially or fully crashed, and you can waste a lot of time switching off your computer, cold booting and going through all the stages of restarting the game. However, by simply pressing <Enter>, you return to your Main Menu and can reload a previously saved game.
Due to all the above, it is highly advisable to save much more frequently than in many other games, particularly since the program has a tendency to ~really~ crash and lock up. In addition, there appears to be at least one place where you can get totally stuck.
Due to all these reasons, I would recommend saving every time you make any progress, and also before any 'new situation'. There are only 8 save slots, with a maximum of 10 characters per slot, but they can be constantly overwritten, and even shifted to alternative directories if so desired.
