Inventory advice
Your inventory grows and grows throughout the game, and quite a lot of items you have acquired are not removed after use. By the time you have finished, your inventory may still contain 40 to 45 items.
The inventory window can be toggled on/off using the spacebar. It can be scrolled, enlarged or reduced. If it is intrusive, it can be moved to any more convenient position on your screen.
Only about half of the items in your inventory are actually used in the game; the rest are complete red herrings. There will be many objects you can (and probably will) take which you'll never be able to use, and these will only add to your already cluttered inventory and increase the complexity of possible combinations for future usage. But you would be advised to take them anyhow; you never know what you'll need or where, and you can't afford the chance of missing something which may turn out to be essential (or at the very least useful in developing the narrative or providing hints).
As usual, the general rule for all Quest/Adventure games applies also to this game: "It's always safest to take anything and everything that is not actually nailed down!"
Generally the item which you are obliged to use has been picked up fairly recently, but there is at least one or more exception to this. It is possible that you may have to use an object acquired quite a while previously.
Occasionally you have to use the same (retained) inventory item more than once.
