Fable: The Lost Chapters Hints

Experience and Combat Multipliers

  • You gain experience points in four categories in this game: general, strength, skill, and will. General points are often awarded to you in large chunks when you complete quests, plus you get some every time you pick up an experience orb after killing a creature. The strength, skill, and will XP is given to you directly when you use a specific form of attack. For instance, if you kill an earth troll with a sword, you'll get strength XP every time you injure the troll with your sword (plus general XP from the XP orbs it leaves behind when it dies). Skill XP is mainly gained by using a bow to damage creatures, and will XP is gotten for magic use.

The combat multiplier, which is shown near the top left of the screen when you have one, goes up every time you make a successful strike in combat, and goes down when you're successfully struck by an enemy. It also rapidly decreases over time, like after a combat is over or when you're running from one enemy to another if they're not close together. Also, it's greatly decreased any time you move from one region to another.

It's important to get your multiplier up high because any amount of any type of XP you gain will be multiplied by the multiplier! If your multiplier is 3, you'll get three times as much XP as if it were 1, for instance. Read on for some tips on getting your combat multiplier high and taking good advantage of it.

The number one most important tip is to use the Physical Shield spell so that an enemy's strikes will drain your magic points instead of your health. Your combat multiplier only goes down because of a hit if you lose health, so get that shield up and have lots of will potions on the quickbar so you can keep your magic points from draining to zero (at which time the shield spell would go off). Note that you can turn the Physical Shield off the same way you put it on when you're done fighting for awhile.

Another tip is to use your flourish attack as much as you can. You get to use it after making several rapid strikes against an enemy (whether he blocks them or not), and you can keep using it as long as you don't miss or try to run (since the Run key is the same as the Flourish key). The times when I've gotten the absolute highest combat multipliers were when I was surrounded by tough enemies and hit them with flourish after flourish, using the Slow Time spell to help get things done faster.

Combat and quest completion aren't the only ways to gain XP. There are a few produce and potion items that will give you non-general XP when consumed. They are:

    red meat (strength XP)
    carrots (skill XP)
    fish (will XP)
Ages of Strength potions (strength XP)
Ages of Skill potions (skill XP)
Ages of Will potions (will XP)

Save up all the items you can get in the above list, then quickly consume them when your combat multiplier is very high. It can be handy to put an item that you have a lot of down on the quickbar and then hit its quick key extremely rapidly to eat that item up fast before your multiplier can drop. You can buy lots of the cheap produce listed above from the random traders in the Greatwood areas, plus there are usually plenty of bandits to snipe with your bow to get your combat multiplier up. Spend some time going back and forth between the Greatwood Entrance and Greatwood Lake areas building up some serious XP (remembering the tip about using the Physical Shield spell).

An even better place to get big combat multipliers is the Hobbe Cave in the Greatwood Caves area, whether you're on the quest related to that cave or not. Also, try the Grey House and all of its powerful undead warriors. Later on, after you finish the gold quest called "Prison Break," the Cliffside Path is the best place to go, what with all of its undead that keep constantly rising from the ground.

Another way to get lots of will XP is to cast and uncast Physical Shield over and over again quickly when your combat multiplier is high. You'll need to have will potions on the item quickbar for fast chugging so you don't keep running out of magic points.
