Fishing and Digging
Once you get a fishing rod and a spade (both of which can be purchased from the trader near the exit gate in Bowerstone South), you can go fishing in any accessible body of water and digging in any spot on the ground in an attempt to find stuff.
To fish, walk up to the edge of some body of water so that the hook icon appears on your context-sensitive items menu. When it does, press the corresponding key to start the fishing mini-game. It's fairly simple. Click rapidly to reel the fish in when it's not pulling on the line, and click more slowly when it is pulling on the line so that you don't accidentally break the line (which you will do if you click while the color bar on the upper right display is bright red).
Once the fish is on the hook, you've got it and can pull it in and put it in your inventory. You can always catch a yummy health-restoring (and will XP-giving) fish every time you go fishing, but that's not all you can get. If you fish in a spot that has ripples on the water with little bubbles coming up, you can catch an item that's submerged in the water. Several silver keys can only be gotten this way, for example.
Fortunately, digging is a lot easier. When you're standing on a spot where you can get something by digging, the spade icon appears on the context-sensitive items menu (in the same spot the fishing icon does when you can fish), and all you have to do is press the appropriate key to dig up the item -- no mini-game on this one.
