Fable: The Lost Chapters Hints

Stealing Stuff

  • In any populated area that has guards, like towns and villages, it's a crime to steal things from homes, shops, barrels that you bash, etc. You'll usually get evil alignment points for doing any of that, but you won't get fined by the guards unless you're caught in the act.

To avoid detection during crimes, it's best to do them at night while wearing stealthy clothing like the assassin outfit. Also, use the Creep key to move stealthily if anyone is nearby. Always keep an eye on the awareness indicator that's at the top left of the mini map -- you can steal in broad daylight if that indicator is blank. (You can bribe guards with 1,000 gold whenever you want to commit a crime near them, but it's not worth it -- see next paragraph.)

If you do accrue a fine, you can just run away or teleport away with the guild seal and wait awhile for the fine to be forgiven. To see if a fine has vanished yet, check the area in question in the map section of the in-game menu.

To steal a display item at a shop, you have to have at least 3 levels in the guile skill. Stand so that the item you want to steal is highlighted in blue and the steal icon appears in the context-sensitive item menu, then press and hold its key until the steal bar (top right of screen) is full. Release the key rapidly if you're detected.

As noted above, the best time to steal things is at night. That goes for stealing shop items, too. Outdoor vendors will take their items home with them, but you can break into shops by bashing their doors (or lockpicking them if your guile skill is 6 or 7). If you get a fine for opening the door, run back outside and quickly pay a guard for it. Then go back inside to find that the shop display items are still out. Use the steal expression to nab them all, then exit and reenter the town and repeat the process until daybreak. Then sell all the stuff you stole back to the merchant you stole it from when his shop opens!
