Fable: The Lost Chapters Hints

Saving and Loading Games

  • One of the many ways this game shows its console-ish nature is by how saved games are handled. When you're on a gold (essential) quest or certain silver quests and are in a quest-related area, you can only do a "hero save," which means your gold, skills, experience points, other personal attributes, and (usually) inventory are saved, but not your progress on the quest or your exact location. When you restore the save, you'll be back at the point right before the quest officially began, and everything you've done on that quest will be undone.

That includes getting items and gaining experience. If you play a ways through a quest, hacking monsters and getting treasure, and then do a "hero save," you can immediately load that save back up and hack the same monsters and get the same treasure again, ending up with more items and XP. It can be tedious doing this a lot with every quest, so just do it when it greatly profits you, like when you can get a silver key or Elixir of Life or something great like that in a quest area -- build up your inventory of rare items fast!

The other type of save, called "world save," is more like a standard saved game in that it saves pretty much exactly where you are, and loading it up doesn't set you back any (though you're usually put back at the entry point of the area). Those are useful to make every now and then, but aren't very exploitable.
