Fallout: New Vegas Hints
What is the effect of karma, and how can I raise and lower it?
1 of 5: Karma is basically this game's "good vs. evil" scale. It mainly affects your interactions with NPCs, but not to any great extent.
2 of 5: You can see what your general karma rating is by going to the Stats/General section of your Pip-Boy. To see exactly what it is on the -1000 to 1000 scale, you'll have to use the PC Cheat Codes' command "player.getav karma".
3 of 5: The main way to raise and lower karma is also in interactions with NPCs. Being friendly and helpful (especially to those in need) can raise your karma, as can killing evil NPCs and creatures. Being rude or violent to good or neutral people will lower it, as will killing them.
4 of 5: Also note that stealing stuff in towns will always lower your karma a bit, and thoroughly looting several towns will make you as evil as any mass murderer. Repeatedly accessing an owned computer terminal is another way to slowly but surely lower your karma. (Also, try putting items in an owned container and then taking them back later.)
5 of 5: NOTE: If there are any quick and easy ways to raise karma, I don't know about them. Fortunately, having a high karma doesn't seem to be useful for anything, though the follower named Cass won't like it if your karma is too low.
