Fallout: New Vegas Hints

How can I pickpocket something that a person is wearing?

  • 1 of 9: By first giving him something better.
  • 2 of 9: "Better" meaning an item that takes up the same clothing slot as the item you're after, and has a higher damage threshold (DT) value.
  • 3 of 9: You give the new item to the person by pickpocketing him and clicking on the item in your inventory. That will attempt to transfer it to his inventory.
  • 4 of 9: Always quicksave before trying this, since you can get caught -- just the same as if you were trying to take something.
  • 5 of 9: Once you successfully transfer the new item to the person's inventory, leave the area, quicksave and quickrestore, then return in order to get him to equip it. (If he doesn't, it must not have a high enough DT.)
  • 6 of 9: After he switches to the item you gave him, quicksave and pickpocket him to get the item you're after. (Note that if it's particularly heavy or valuable, it may take many tries.)
  • 7 of 9: For example, let's say a friendly NPC in a town is wearing a hat that you want. Its DT is 2, so use pickpocketing to give him a combat helmet with a DT of 3. Go away and return later, and you should be able to pickpocket the NPC's now-unequipped hat.
  • 8 of 9: If you don't know what the DT is on a worn item you're wanting to get, you could quicksave, kill the NPC, check the DT rating on the item you want, then quickrestore and pickpocket-give him something with a higher DT.
  • 9 of 9: Or you could skip that and just try giving him something with a fairly high DT on it, hoping it's high enough. Combat armor and helmets that are in good condition are usually adequate, especially if the item you're after isn't armor.
