Fallout: New Vegas Hints

Putting the Hit on Motor-Runner

  • 1 of 12: Go to Camp McCarran (location 37 on the Zone 1 Map) and talk to Col. James Hsu in his office, which is on the east side of the huge terminal building's ground floor.
  • 2 of 12: Tell him you're there to provide support, then ask about the fiends. You'll learn that a ranger was sent to Vault 3 to kill a fiend named Motor-Runner, but he never reported back.
  • 3 of 12: If you haven't done the "Aba Daba Honeymoon" Great Khans faction quest yet, you should get it so you can gain free access to Vault 3 (location 31 on the Zone 1 Map) without having to fight all the fiends in it. The only other way to accomplish that is to pass a Speech 64 check when you enter.
  • 4 of 12: Go through the entry room's back door, then turn left and go south to where you can use a door to enter the Living Quarters area. Turn left and go through the door that's ahead, then loot the dead fiend and start watching for traps.
  • 5 of 12: Just past the fiend is a frag mine, followed by a grenade bouquet and tripwire, followed by another frag mine. Once you're past those, use the door to reach an otherwise-inaccessible section of the vault's Recreation Area.
  • 6 of 12: Past a couple more frag mines, go through the door to find Bryce Anders. He's the missing ranger Col. Hsu told you about, so talk to him and tell him that Hsu sent you.
  • 7 of 12: You can pass a Medicine 35 check and use a doctor's bag on him (or pass a Speech 75 check without healing him) to get him to go after Motor-Runner with you, but that's not very useful since the fiends will shoot him down long before you reach Motor-Runner. It's best to send him back to Camp McCarran, whether you heal him or not.
  • 8 of 12: Motor-Runner is in the Maintenance Wing area, which is entered from the north end of the Recreation Area. Use the local area map to help you navigate your way up there, then enter the Maintenance Wing and go through some doors to get to the northern room.
  • 9 of 12: Go up to Motor-Runner and talk to him, but don't say the NCR sent you unless you want to make an arrangement with him where you buy his helmet for 200 caps.
  • 10 of 12: If you don't want to pay for his helmet, use the Stealing Tips to either pickpocket it from him or to kill him without turning anyone else hostile so you can take it from his corpse. (Note that the pickpocketing option is better since he'll still be alive for the "Supplying the Fiends" undocumented quest.)
  • 11 of 12: Once you have his helmet, optionally sneak-kill other fiends to gain karma and loot, then leave the vault and head back to Col. Hsu's office at Camp McCarren. If you got Bryce Anders out alive, Hsu will thank you for it, and you'll get some NCR fame.
  • 12 of 12: Say that you have Motor-Runner's helmet as proof that he's dead (whether he is or not) to get more NCR fame, 300 caps, and 350 XP.
