Big Guns

  • This skill allows you to use miniguns, flamethrowers, and rocket launchers. I personally chose to avoid it.

The major reason that I ignored this skill was that pretty much every big gun (if not all of them) use some kind of wide-ranging attack -- either a burst mode, or something else with an area effect like a rocket.  Burst modes are likely to attack anything in your way -- including members of your party, and in many cases, no matter how you try to instruct them, members of your party will be in the way.

If there's an enemy standing just in front of you, you can use burst safely -- all of the bullets will hit them   But for all of the weak enemies who ordinarily come up and attack you with melee weapons, the burst mode on a small gun is usually enough.  And I wasn't the kind of player who liked walking up to big enemies voluntarily and attacking them from close up. Especially since, as you should keep in mind, each bullet from a burst attack is treated separately for the purposes of damage modifiers.  Minigun bullets may just end up bouncing off the tougher targets, unless you're lucky enough to get a critical hit, even if you do fire a lot of them.

If you find that you do like walking up and using burst attacks on big enemies, or if you find that it's safe to use burst mode on small guns regularly, you can always build up your Big Guns skill later on.  In any case, it's not a skill you're going to find much use for at all early in the game -- that is, before you find big guns to use.
