Fallout 2 Hints
Melee Weapons
This skill will let you use knives and spears (for thrusting or swinging, but not throwing), as well as other weapons like sledgehammers that you can swing at your opponents.
Near the start of the game, ammunition and guns will be in short supply. This means that you'll need some kind of combat skill to help you through fights -- as always, of course, presuming you don't want to try a peaceful path through the game. You should be able to find a good selection of these weapons, making this a good choice.
Once you start finding a greater supply of guns and ammunition, though, you can probably safely stop building this skill, and instead divert your skill points to the various gun skills.
