Barter
Barter will let you sell or trade your items for a greater price.
Money will be generally tight at the start of the game. That is, shopkeepers won't have much cash on hand to give you for your goods, and you may have to accept other goods in return. And you may have to trade those goods again to get exactly what you want -- losing value with each round of bartering. In addition, you won't find many valuable goods to trade at the start of the game. So a good barter skill might help you out financially, so you can get better goods and weapons and armor earlier in the game.
But if you choose to fight, you can usually loot some valuable items off bodies, especially later in the game, and then sell these. This means you'll have a huge surplus of cash near the end of the game, so bartering may not be worth building up in the long run for you. This is therefore a skill better suited for those who want to avoid combat and have to make use of what little they otherwise find.
