Fallout 2 Hints
What perks should I select?
1 of 5: As with everything else, a lot depends on what kind of character you're playing. But as I general rule, I tried to select perks that gave me something that would otherwise be unavailable with skill increases.
2 of 5: As far as combat goes, "Action Boy" and "Bonus Rate of Fire" and things like that -- which have a direct impact on your character's abilities -- are generally very helpful. If you're going to be doing lots of fighting, take these, especially if they make the difference between having 1 and 2 attacks per round. "Living Anatomy" is also a very useful one for the extra damage.
3 of 5: Some perks will let you increase your character's primary statistics -- or else have a similar effect as increasing these statistics. You can use these to correct for what you discover to be deficiencies in the character you created, and are sometimes worth more than a direct increase to the primary statistic. You may even want to create characters initially a little weak in one area, with the plan of using these perks later.
For example, "Magnetic Personality" can be useful if you have a low charisma and need to pick up an extra NPC for the combat help or carrying weight. (Note that by giving you one more NPC, this is effectively worth 2 charisma points for the sake of party size.) "Lifegiver" and "Educated" can be useful if taken early -- especially if your character needs more hit points (because of low endurance) or skill points (because of the "Gifted" trait or low intelligence).
4 of 5: "Swift Learner" if taken early can also help you increase levels more quickly. I would recommend taking this once or twice for the extra experience.
5 of 5: As far as perks that increase your skills go, keep in mind that "Tag!" will let you increase your abilities in one skill area -- and in many cases, the bonus is worth more than the bonuses from a lot of other skill-increasing perks. Of course, this doesn't apply if you've already tagged a skill and want to improve it further.
