East Half Combat Tips
of 17: Stop at the top of the stairs and look to the left to see if you can spot any super mutants in the distance.
of 17: You should be able to see one or two of them. Use a pistol or a sniper rifle to hit them and get their attention, then retreat to the bottom of the stairs until they get close.
of 17: If they overwhelm you, run back through the gate to the Museum Station for a breather, then go back outside to resume the fight.
of 17: Another way is to get the mutants' attention and lead them over to the barricade that's around the Washington Monument, where some patrolling Brotherhood of Steel members will help you shoot them down.
of 17: After you get all the super mutants you can without straying far from the stairs, use your sniper rifle scope to see if you can shoot any that are hanging way back in the distance instead of charging you. Ones who have hunting rifles will often do this.
of 17: Then switch to an up-close weapon and run around the edges of the nearby trench without falling in. You should find at least one super mutant down there to shoot.
of 17: Go over near the Washington Monument, then all the way over to the region's south border. Turn left (east) and move along next to the buildings until you come to a side area with two super mutants in it.
of 17: After killing them, go straight north from their side area to reach a rubble wall. Look to some higher ground just past the wall to see a super mutant near a sandbag wall.
of 17: Shoot him down, then go west along the wall until you can turn right and cross over the trench on some boards. Watch for a super mutant with a melee weapon, since he's probably detected you and started after you by now.
of 17: Move east until you pass the trench and find a path that leads up to the sandbag wall where you shot down that other mutant.
of 17: Get out your sniper rifle and see if you can shoot any mutants in the area between you and the Capitol Building. Most of them are probably too far away, but check carefully.
of 17: Go north to the "wall of buildings" border, then turn right and move along until you reach the large area on the left with the National Archives building in it. Look in the street to the right of the building for two super mutants to kill.
of 17: Exit the side area, then turn left and make your way along between the rubble and the trench until you're to where you have a good view of the Capitol Building.
of 17: You could get out your sniper rifle and snipe at super mutants near the Capitol Building now, but it's more ammo-conservative to move toward the Capitol Building until some explosions start happening.
of 17: That signals the Talon Company assault on the Capitol Building, so hang back and let mercs fight the super mutants. After their battle seems to be over, use your sniper rifle to snipe at the survivors (which will probably be several mercs and protectrons).
of 17: When you think you've gotten them all, run all around the areas in front of the Capitol Building to be sure.
of 17: NOTE: New super mutants will sometimes appear later on in areas you've already cleared. This also seems to happen sometimes when you restore a saved game, so you might want to be careful to not have to do that very often (or do it a lot to get more combat XP and loot).
