Fallout 3 Hints
Problems and Notes
1 of 5: The max level setting will get reset to 20 (or 30 with Broken Steel) whenever you exit the game and rerun it, so you'll either have to keep resetting it to the number you want every time you run the game, or use the Garden of Eden Creation Kit (G.E.C.K.) program to permanently change it.
2 of 5: Recent patches have fixed the problem of the level-up process stalling on the skill screen when you get to where you can't allocate all of your available skill points. However, it will still stall on the perk screen if there are one or more perks left, and you can't take any of them for whatever reasons.
3 of 5: This most commonly happens with the Here and Now perk. In the original game, you have to take it before you reach level 20. If the Broken Steel add-on is installed, you'll have to take it before you reach level 30. Any changes you make to the max character level setting won't make any difference to it. If you want to be able to keep leveling up indefinitely, you'll need to take the Here and Now perk while you still can. To get the most benefit from it, take it at level 19 (or level 29 if Broken Steel is installed).
4 of 5: Another potential problem is the Intense Training perk, especially if you have Broken Steel installed and get the Almost Perfect perk at level 30 (or later). You'll need to plan things so that after you get the Almost Perfect perk, you'll still be able to use up all remaining Intense Training perks. Remember that just because there are seven attributes, that doesn't mean you can save seven Intense Training perks for after you get the Almost Perfect perk. If you get any attributes to 10 before getting the Almost Perfect perk, you then won't be able to use an Intense Training perk for that attribute later.
5 of 5: However, even if you're not careful to avoid "perk jams," you can still level up all the way to 85 or so (100 or so with Broken Steel), which is probably a lot farther than most players would care to go. Think of all the XP needed for that kind of leveling!
