Retrieve the G.E.C.K.

  • 1 of 18: If you got in through Murder Pass, use the following directions to get to the room you'd have ended up in if you'd gone the other route. Move along the tunnel and through the first sliding metal door, then turn left and go down some stairs. Turn right at the next split, and go through two sliding metal doors in a row.
  • 2 of 18: Go through a metal sliding door to reach a room where some junk has been piled in front of another door. Before you hop over it or drag it out of the way with the Grab key, you might want to use the nearby terminal to read some journal entries and/or break into the big floor safe.
  • 3 of 18: Past the "barricaded" door, go past the side corridor on the left and through another door to find a few items next to a mannequin, including an Energy Weapons skill book in a box.
  • 4 of 18: Go back to the side corridor and up the steps, then turn left and move into the next room, watching for several radroaches over to the left.
  • 5 of 18: If you make a lot of noise killing the roaches, three super mutants in the area past the next door may hear you and come into the room after you. Otherwise, you can sneak up on them, plant mines to lure them past, etc.
  • 6 of 18: After the mutants are dead, head up two sets of stairs to reach a door to the Living Quarters area.
  • 7 of 18: When you go through the door at the other end of the Living Quarters' starting room, be ready for an attack by a very tough super mutant that swings a big hammer.
  • 8 of 18: Go up some stairs and through another door to reach a large multi-level room, then start shooting a mutant on the upper level. Wait until he runs down to your level, then finish him off.
  • 9 of 18: Optionally explore and loot all of the side rooms, then go down the corridor that starts near the multi-level room's NE corner to find the stairs.
  • 10 of 18: Past them, there are several side rooms to loot, plus two doorways that lead to the upper walkways in the multi-level room. Be ready for two or more super mutants to ambush you when you go through either of those doorways. Retreat and take them down one at a time.
  • 11 of 18: After they're dead, search the gore bags hanging over the walkways for items, then go through one of the two doors the mutants ran in through and see if you can pick open a nearby locked door. If you can, you'll be able to get lots of supplies from the room beyond, including an Unarmed skill book.
  • 12 of 18: Go up the nearby stairs, watching on the right for a barricade with a couple of mutants behind it. You can toss some frag grenades back there with them, try to shoot them through the barricade while dodging their fire, or just go down the hallway and meet them there.
  • 13 of 18: Go through the doorway next to their barricade and up two sets of stairs to reach the Test Lab door.
  • 14 of 18: Go down the long Test Lab hallway, blasting super mutants and freaky "centaurs," until you come to a path split and hear the voice of a mutant talking to you over the intercom.
  • 15 of 18: Look to the left to see the window of the room that the mutant, Fawkes, is on the other side of. Use the intercom to the right of the window to talk to Fawkes and get the "(Optional) Rescue Fawkes from the Observation Cells" objective.
  • 16 of 18: That objective may be technically optional, but you should consider it essential. However, before you do it, you should go back the way you came and leave Vault 87, then go sell and/or store all of the items you've picked up so far. Return with your best armor and one or two favorite weapons, plus plenty of stimpaks and chems, when you're ready to continue.
  • 17 of 18: Free Fawkes, then start following him along. When you encounter enemies, help Fawkes kill them, but be sure not to accidentally hit him. (Note that if you want him to have a gun or more stimpaks, you can talk to him and ask to trade equipment. You can also get his unique super sledge that way.)
  • 18 of 18: When you reach the door to the radioactive area, Fawkes will talk to you, and then go in after the G.E.C.K. Stay where you are until he comes back, then talk to him to get the G.E.C.K. at last.
