F.E.A.R. Hints

General Tips

  • 1 of 8: The Quick Load key (F9 on the PC) works a bit oddly in this game. It doesn't necessarily restore the quicksave file, but instead restores whichever save was most recently accessed (either saved or loaded). This can be very confusing until you get used to it.
  • 2 of 8: One of the most commonly used strategies for this kind of game is to quickly and recklessly run through a new, unexplored area right after saving your game, and then restore your save and approach the same area with your new knowledge of its layout and where all the enemies are hiding. This allows you to minimize injuries and ammo consumption while clearing out the area (or just running through it if that turns out to work).
  • 3 of 8: Jumping can be used to get across some fairly wide gaps as long as you get a running start, since that allows your jump to go a little farther. Also, put your weapon away with the "Holster weapon" key so you can move a bit faster. If you're wanting to jump up onto a crate or something like that, you don't need a running start -- instead, press the Jump key while moving up against the item.
  • 4 of 8: You should always be on the lookout for small, low-down spaces and passageways that you can enter if you crouch while walking into them. Many buildings have ventilation shafts that you can enter after breaking the shaft's grate covering with weapons fire or a melee attack. (It may take more than one hit.) Note, though, that bashing grates makes noise that nearby enemies can hear, and shooting out a grate would make even more noise.
  • 5 of 8: When climbing a ladder, you can turn your flashlight on and off, but can't use a weapon. Due to this, you'll want to only climb ladders when there are no enemies nearby who can see you. If you ever need to drop down off a ladder quickly, use the Jump key (and watch out that you don't take damage from falling too far).
  • 6 of 8: Always look around for interactive items, especially in a room that appears to be a dead end. There are often doors you can open, control panels and wall switches you can use, laptop computers you can access, etc. When you're facing an interactive item and are standing close enough to it, the blue hand icon will appear near the bottom center of the screen. When it does, press the Use key.
  • 7 of 8: You can use your flashlight to help you see in dim and dark areas, allowing you to spot interactive items and supplies you otherwise might have missed. However, be careful about using the flashlight in a dark area with enemies nearby -- they're smart enough to know that flashlights don't move around on their own.
  • 8 of 8: Whenever you can't pick up a medkit or some ammo because your inventory is full, try to remember where it is so you can come back later on when you need it. (Or just remember to search through areas you've already been through whenever you're low on something.)
