1 of 3: Yes, go around him. Don't face him early in the game.
2 of 3: Later on in the game, you can face him for experience.
3 of 3: He's got two deadly attacks. One is a tail swipe that knocks a team member off-screen which means they can't fight in the battle anymore. The other is the Beta enemy skill, which inflicts around 1000-1200 points of damge.
