Obviously, Final Fantasy VIII is the eighth in the series. Final Fantasy VII is also available on the PC and is about a revolution against an oppresive corporation and an ancient threat to the world. The games do not share a common world, although some of the names are the same (Cid is a pilot, Biggs and Wedge are two freedom fighters).
Alternatively, other more complicated RPGs can be purchased from Black Isle including Planescape: Torment (at the time of writing the finest on the market) and Baldur's Gate. Septerra Core is a similar game to Final Fantasy VIII, but without the wonderful graphics.
