Gothic 3 Hints
Magic Item Chests
There are 45 special chests in the game that I call magic item chests because all together, they contain a large and varied set of magic items, including otherwise-ungettable ones like the Staff of the Water Mages. Each magic item isn't set to a specific magic item chest, but is instead assigned a specific slot in the sequence. No matter which of the magic item chests you open first, you'll get a Scroll of Fireball from it, since it's set to be the first in the sequence. The second magic item chest you open will give you an Amulet of Energy Defense, and so on down to the 45th chest you open giving you the Staff of the Water Mages.
Several of these chests are in restricted or hard-to-get-to-areas, but you should be able to get to most of them after building up your character a little. If you go on a "magic item chest pilgrimage," you can end up getting several powerful magic items fairly early in the game.
NOTE: I've heard that there's a 46th chest somewhere near Angir's tomb in Nordmar, but I could never find it.
MYRTANA
Cape Dun:
* near the impossible-lock chest in the two-dragon area in the cave complex underneath the city
Geldern:
* a bit to the right of Grok's throne
* in the shaman's quarters (next to Grok's throne room)
* in Grimboll's house
Gotha:
* in the big alchemist's building near the castle gate
* in the western-most house in the area past the castle
Montera:
* in the very back (NE corner) of the large cave that's just behind the grain thieves' hideout (see the mission relating to those thieves)
* in Rakus' cave (see the Okara missions related to Rakus)
* in a minecrawler cave that's directly east of Montera and directly north of Cape Dun (it's easiest to start at Reddock and go NW until you reach the right spot)
Okara:
* in the alchemist's cave room (near Roland's)
* in the ogre camp in the canyon just south of town
Reddock:
* in Sebastian's room
Silden
* in Grompel's hut
Trelis
* in Kamak's room inside the eastern temple
* in the room just before Kamak's room
* in stone circle with gargoyles a ways SE of the temple (follow the shore along)
Vengard:
* in the left (NW) tent of the three-tent cluster in the orc siege camp a bit SW of the city
* in Karrypto's room in the castle
* in the second orc commander's house
* in a stone circle with gargoyles that's a bit NW of Vengard (near the ruins that Tippler wants you to clear of goblins on a Faring mission)
NORDMAR
Fire Clan:
* near the throne in Baldar's tomb (see the ancestor missions)
Hammer Clan:
* in the small mine section that's accessible via the large orc camp just north of the village (or by entering the mine's upper entrance, running along until you come to a long, down-slanting path, then looking to the right and dropping down)
* in the back of Snorre's tomb (see the Fire Clan's ancestor missions)
* in the back of Berek's tomb (see the Fire Clan's ancestor missions)
Monastery:
* on the very bottom floor of the library (in the same chest as the monastery's teleporter stone)
Wolf Clan:
* in the camp with the orc drummer (see the hunting party missions)
* next to the burned-out hut that's at the east end of the little stick-out peninsula of land near Nordmar's SE corner
* next to a broken-down cart guarded by a black troll a ways east of the village (start at the previous chest, follow the east "coast" carefully along until you come to a bushy area with bloody tracks that start next to a broken-down cart, follow the path that leads west from the cart until it ends, then look for the black troll a short distance to the SW)
* in the large tent in the orc camp that's a ways directly east of the Hammer Clan village (start at the previous chest, go back to the nearby path, and follow it along until you reach the orc camp)
VARANT
Al Shedim:
* half-buried in sand a bit south of the red X in the guardians of the dead section on Saturas' map
* a ways almost directly east of the red X in the warriors' school section on Saturas' map
* in the healers' quarter section on Saturas' map (in a spot that's almost in the exact center of the triangle formed by the red X's in the temple fighter, warriors' school, and healers' quarter sections on Saturas' map)
* by a broken-down shack that's next to a mountain ridge a ways NE of the Al Shedim area (it's a ways west of Knut's oasis, and about halfway between the Al Shedim and Ben Sala temples -- watch out for a dragon nearby)
Bakaresh:
* in Rasarus' robber cave a bit north of the city
* in the back of a cave that's a ways NE of the city (along the dotted line shown on the world map, just a bit SW of a hostile orc camp)
Ben Erai:
* inside the sandcrawler cave (see Vasco's crawler hunt mission)
* next to a small wall section at the SE end of Hurit's camp (see the related bounty hunting mission)
Ben Sala:
* in the zombie-infested ruins up on the hill just SE of town
Braga:
* in the back of Kurt's bandit camp (see the Nemora mission about the renegade paladin)
* on a small plateau with a monster that's a bit SE of Asaru's cave (see the liberation missions)
* at the oasis a ways SW of town (follow the road that leads SW from town until you find it)
Ishtar:
* in the treasure room in the back of Zuben's palace
* in the underground storage rooms that are enterable just SE of the arena fighting floor (look for a side room down there with two unnamed chests)
Mora Sul:
* behind a pillar that's behind the throne in Gonzales' house
* in the next-to-last room of the temple that's a ways south of the city
