What chest should I unlock, and why?
1 of 4: If you've explored the two side tunnels in the big sunken pit area in Gotha's village, you'll have found a guarded jail cell in one of them.
2 of 4: Near that cell is a locked chest labeled "Prisoners' chest." Depending on the choice you're going to be making soon, you may greatly benefit from unlocking that chest now.
3 of 4: To do so, you'll need to be able to pick difficult locks or have Errol's key (or use an Open Locks scroll on it).
4 of 4: After you unlock the chest, you can loot a few items from it. Better yet, if you refuse to buy a freedom pass for 5000 gold later on, you'll be able to get all of your confiscated inventory items back from the chest right away instead of having to wait.
