Grim Fandango Hints
How can I upgrade the Bone Wagon to work off-road?
of 17: Well, Glottis is the one who will do the actual repair work. But you should still help him find the parts.
of 17: Head to the right from the central screen in the Petrified Forest. You will find a tree pumping station here.
of 17: Glottis thinks that those pumps would be perfect for the Bone Wagon. You just need to shake them loose.
of 17: Switch the power off, and Glottis will go up to add some weights to the stabilizer.
of 17: The weights might help a bit, but they're not going to knock the tree over. You still need to find a way of destabilizing the tree a bit more.
of 17: If you look around closely enough, you'll notice that you can adjust the timing of the pumps.
of 17: So that they might shake the tree a bit more.
of 17: Notice the wheelbarrow? If you pick it up, you can move it back and forth. You can even put it over the hoses that feed the pumps.
of 17: Take a very close look at what happens when you move the wheelbarrow on top of a hose, and then what happens when you move the wheelbarrow off.
of 17: A pump stops when the wheelbarrow goes over the hose, and it starts back when it moves off. (The first two hoses on the left go to the pumps on the left side of the tree, and the right two go to the right side.)
of 17: In fact, the timing of the pump changes when you move the wheelbarrow off a hose.
of 17: With a little bit of practice, you can adjust the timing on the pumps so that both pumps on the same side of the tree move in sync with each other.
of 17: And you can also adjust the timing so that the pumps on one side of the tree move completely _out_ of sync with those other side.
of 17: You're shaking the tree a bit more now. But you still need to destablize i even further
of 17: Glottis might be able to add some more weight to the stabilizer.
of 17: Like himself.
of 17: You can turn the power back on while Glottis is working on the tree. If the pumps have been adjusted to shake the tree, Glottis will provide the extra weight to knock over the tree. If the tree doesn't fall over, you can adjust the pumps while Glottis is still on the tree.
