Half-Life Hints

How do I survive elevator rides on the tram?

  • 1 of 9: Riding the tram on a tram elevator can be tough. Soldiers are always waiting on different levels of the elevator shaft. These hints generally focus on upward-moving tram elevators, as downward-moving tram elevators tend to be quite harmless. It is a matter of vulnerability.
  • 2 of 9: You never want to ride the tram on the elevator, though. It is just too tough to try to shoot while moving upward and while rotating with the tram.
  • 3 of 9: Instead, most upward-going tram elevators have alternative ways to get up to the top of the elevator shaft.
  • 4 of 9: Determine where you will go as opposed to where the tram will go once it enters the elevator shaft.
  • 5 of 9: Some elevators have a ladder in the elevator shaft that you can jump onto, others have a parallel pedestrian elevator nearby that you can ride up.
  • 6 of 9: You will almost always pop up behind the soldiers waiting in ambush if you take these secondary routes up the elevator shaft.
  • 7 of 9: Ladders tend to be the better ways to go, since you usually end up behind some boxes or behind enough cover to shield you from your enemies.
  • 8 of 9: With parallel pedestrian elevators, you will still be at a disadvantage while moving upwards. An enemy in an elevated position is very difficult to kill without being killed.
  • 9 of 9: Send a C4 explosive pack (one of the more recent additions to your arsenal) up with the elevator before you ride it up. Detonate it when the elevator reaches the top. That should take care of any soldiers waiting at the top of the elevator. (Also any explosive crates with one certain elevator.)
