Half-Life 2: Episode One Hints

How can I get up there? It's too high to jump to from the "floor."

  • 1 of 18: Then look around for higher-up jumping-off points that you could use.
  • 2 of 18: There are two sets of brown pipes nearby. Check those out.
  • 3 of 18: The one on the left looks like you could jump right off its end and onto the floor fragment with the gas canister.
  • 4 of 18: But when you try, the creaky thing will lower, making you miss your jump even if you sprint.
  • 5 of 18: Notice that the pipe set didn't break -- it just acted like a seesaw, meaning it can come back up into its original position (but not when you're weighing down its forward end).
  • 6 of 18: Remember what you did with the seesaw-like puzzle in Chapter 3 of the main game? Try doing something similar here.
  • 7 of 18: Find something heavy enough to weight down the back end of this "seesaw." (No amount of paint cans and small plastic baskets will do it.)
  • 8 of 18: There are some heavy-looking machines right near the pipes, but none of them can be moved. Ditto for the big cases back in the previous room.
  • 9 of 18: So if weighting down the other end of the pipes is impossible, what other options could there be?
  • 10 of 18: Maybe if you didn't run all the way down the pipes, thereby giving them the opportunity to dip before you can jump.
  • 11 of 18: Find the small ledge on the left near the front end of the pipes, the one with the three oven-looking devices on it.
  • 12 of 18: Try running onto the pipes from the end of that ledge and then jumping quickly to the floor piece with the gas canister on it.
  • 13 of 18: It still may not work, so combine the two ideas.
  • 14 of 18: Put enough small junk on the back end of the pipes so that they'll be level when you're not on them.
  • 15 of 18: The paint cans and plastic baskets in the room should be enough. (In fact, the two items that start out on the back end of the pipes will be enough if they're still there.)
  • 16 of 18: Then get up onto the ledge and try the running and jumping maneuver described above.
  • 17 of 18: This is tricky and error-prone, but it seemed to work best for me when I moved to the back of the ledge and then sprint-ran onto the pipes and quickly jumped for the floor ahead.
  • 18 of 18: ALTERNATIVE: Put a couple of paint cans and/or plastic baskets underneath the pipes as far back as you can to help bolster them up and keep them from dipping very far. That should make a straight jump off the pipes work very easily. (Many thanks to The Hypno-Toad for writing in with this suggestion.)
