Half-Life 2: Episode One Hints

Zombie Ambush Tips

  • 1 of 21: Your sniper pal Alyx will help to take down the zombies, but it's very hard to maneuver so that you take no damage while letting her do all the shooting.
  • 2 of 21: Once you drop down to the zombie area, you can get back over the fence by sprinting toward one of the fence's slanty wooden support beams and then jumping frantically, but it's *very* hard to do just right.
  • 3 of 21: It's much easier to finish off several of the zombies before you drop down to their side of the fence and trigger the attack.
  • 4 of 21: Notice that you can walk carefully along the top of the fence.
  • 5 of 21: Go to the fence's other end, then turn and look into the small alcove that's next to where you'd end up if you'd dropped down from the catwalk segment.
  • 6 of 21: You'll be able to see a dormant zombie, so shoot him with the pistol until he gets up.
  • 7 of 21: Instead of shooting him to death yourself, wait until he staggers into Alyx's range and gets shot. (If he gets too close to the fence for her to see him, drop down on the safe side and wait.)
  • 8 of 21: There's another zombie in that same niche, but he's a lot harder to wake up without using a grenade, which are scarce right now.
  • 9 of 21: You could try throwing things like colorful plastic baskets and paint cans so they bounce off the left wall in the alcove and hopefully hit the zombie, but it's hard to do this.
  • 10 of 21: If you want to try, stockpile several items near the fence on the safe side, then climb up the ladder and quicksave. If you run out of items before you can wake up the zombie, quickrestore and try again.
  • 11 of 21: Actually, you can hit him with the pistol, but you have to move perilously close to falling off the fence and then carefully shoot a tiny little bit of the zombie that you can just barely see.
  • 12 of 21: Once that zombie is dead (or you've given up on him for now), locate the open doorway that's on the opposite side of the area from his niche.
  • 13 of 21: If you maneuver around carefully, you'll be able to barely see part of the top of a zombine's head in there, but you won't be able to shoot it awake.
  • 14 of 21: You can use the same throwing-stuff trick that I suggested for the last zombie, but it's much easier to just lob a grenade into the room. The explosion will wake up the zombine and two regular zombies that are in there. (In fact, on Easy difficulty, it'll instantly kill the two regular zombies and maybe the zombine, too.)
  • 15 of 21: After they're "awake," walk around on the fence to try to get them to stagger out into Alyx's sniper range. If that doesn't work, drop down on the safe side of the fence and see if that does (or if the zombine will pull out a grenade and blow himself up).
  • 16 of 21: If not, get some gravity gun ammo and use it to hit them in the head from on top of the catwalk segment or fence. (Or snipe them with your pistol if you have plenty of pistol ammo.)
  • 17 of 21: Once they're all dead, equip your shotgun and drop down to their side of the fence.
  • 18 of 21: Run for the room that the zombine and two zombies came out of, and wait there while Alyx hopefully shoots down the fast zombie that runs at you from the doorway near the back of the area.
  • 19 of 21: Blast him if she doesn't, then move forward enough to get two zombines to run out of the same doorway.
  • 20 of 21: If you need to, hit them in the head with shotgun blasts, quickly switching to the gravity gun if either of them pulls out a grenade. (Grab it and then throw it.)
  • 21 of 21: NOTE: You could have lobbed a grenade or two at that doorway from up on the fence to help weaken the zombies, but it wouldn't have done all that much good.
