Fortified Area Tips
1 of 19: Hang back in the doorway while Alyx snipes a few soldiers from on top of the barricade.
2 of 19: Then notice that there's an antlion spawning pit on the road a ways ahead.
3 of 19: The reason you're not being swarmed by antlions is that a Combine soldier is using a mounted gun up on a shielded ledge to kill the antlions as fast as they can spawn.
4 of 19: Unfortunately, he'll shoot you to pieces very quickly if you try to knock the nearby car onto the antlion pit to block it.
5 of 19: Notice that Alyx can't snipe him because of the sheets of metal that are set up to shield him.
6 of 19: If you use the gravity gun to pull off the back sheet of metal (the one that Alyx's sniper beam is trained on), she can snipe him down easily.
7 of 19: However, the antlions will then no longer be suppressed by the mounted gun.
8 of 19: Alyx will help snipe them, but you'd better be ready to switch from the gravity gun to the shotgun very quickly.
9 of 19: It's best to start off by knocking the car partway down the street so that it'll be closer to the antlion spawn-hole.
10 of 19: Then go remove the soldier's protective back shield.
11 of 19: As soon as you do, drop it and run for the car.
12 of 19: If you finish grav-pushing it into the antlion pit fast enough, no more antlions will spawn and attack you.
13 of 19: As soon as the antlion pit is plugged, sprint for the corner at the right side of the Combine barricade.
14 of 19: Make sure no more antlions are running around, then use the gravity gun to pull over the nearby red gas can.
15 of 19: When the barricade opens to release more soldiers, wait until one comes into view, then throw the gas can at him.
16 of 19: That'll keep him and anyone near him busy burning until Alyx can finish sniping them.
17 of 19: The instant they're all down (or maybe a bit before), run through the open barricade to secure the area and prevent any more soldiers from appearing. (They respawn infinitely until you do this.)
18 of 19: Alyx will soon appear at the other end of the street, but so will a bunch of antlions.
19 of 19: There's no new spawning pit for them, though -- there's a finite number, so get out there and help Alyx take them down by using shotgun shells or grav-thrown items.
