Half-Life 2: Episode One Hints
How can I get through this highly dangerous area?
of 8: Not by detonating anything once you've fallen down into the room, that's for sure. There's no way to survive that.
of 8: Move along the shaft piece until you get to the point where you can pull off a grate covering on the ceiling of the shaft and stand up straight.
of 8: You see that elevator with the dead stalker in it on the other side of the room? That's what you need to get to.
of 8: Jump up onto the top of the shaft piece, then check out all the explosive barrels.
of 8: Don't try to move them, but instead use them as "jumping stones" to get to the elevator.
of 8: Note that one tripmine trigger beam goes across the room a bit higher than barrel height, so you'll have to jump over it.
of 8: ALTERNATIVE: If you have a frag grenade to spare, then don't move forward to where the shaft piece breaks off and falls. Instead, stay back and toss a frag grenade so that it goes out the end of the shaft and blows everything up with you out of harm's way.
of 8: ALTERNATIVE: After the shaft piece falls and you get up on top of it, carefully lift a nearby explosive barrel onto the shaft piece so that you can use it to jump back up into the main shaft. Once there, you can use the pistol to shoot the tripmine on the opposite wall to clear the room safely without having to use any grenades.
