How can I escape a watery death?
1 of 8: Try examining the elevator carefully before you set foot in it.
2 of 8: Specifically, look up at its ceiling.
3 of 8: There's an escape hatch up there that you could probably fit through if the panel were removed.
4 of 8: If you used some method of blowing up the explosives in the room, the panel may already be gone. Otherwise, pull it out with the gravity gun.
5 of 8: Keep your eye on the opening as you enter the elevator and it plunges downward.
6 of 8: As soon as it goes underwater, swim up through the opening and surface.
7 of 8: WARNING: There are three barnacles on the shaft's ceiling high above, and they'll start lowering their super-long tongues soon after you enter the elevator. You may have to shoot them if you can't avoid them.
8 of 8: SHORTCUT: It is possible (though kind of hard) to step onto the elevator and then jump back off of it before it drops into the water. If you manage this, you can jump straight across to the narrow ledge you see on the other side of the elevator shaft, then head left to get to a ladder that you would have come to eventually on the regular route. (Note that taking this shortcut bypasses a few health packs and a shotgun, so go the normal route if you need any of that.)
