Half-Life 2: Episode One Hints

Potential Problems

  • 1 of 7: The worst problem is that the game often freezes soon after you jump down and back up. If this happens, you'll have to bring up the Windows Task Manager (by pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL) and close the game, then rerun it and try again.
  • 2 of 7: One way to help avoid a freeze is to run back to the supply room right away and wait there for a bit. Hopefully, Alyx will be okay on her own until you return.
  • 3 of 7: Another potential problem is that the antlion guard sometimes never comes within weapons range, even after Alyx runs outside on her little catwalk to where he should see her.
  • 4 of 7: If this happens, try crouch-walking out onto the end of the drop-off to see if you can spot the antlion guard anywhere nearby. You may be able to see just the bottom part of him, in which case you can probably shoot him without him moving.
  • 5 of 7: Or you can restore the save you made right before dropping down and jumping back up, and try going through that again to see if it'll work this time. There's a low chance that it will, though.
  • 6 of 7: Another thing you can try if your stack of stuff didn't get knocked around by the APC's destruction (which it shouldn't if you left no explosive barrels nearby) is to drop down onto your top item again so the antlion guard will see you, then jump back up before he can run over.
  • 7 of 7: Or you can stay on your top item when you first drop down to it until you're sure the antlion guard is through with the APC and has seen you.
