Half-Life 2: Episode One Hints
Run for the Corner Strategy
of 13: This strategy is very similar to the easiest one for the first antlion guard in the main game.
of 13: If you'll remember, that strategy involved running across the antlion guard's area and taking cover in a corner behind a large rock so he can't get to you. You're going to do something very similar here.
of 13: When you drop down, have your shotgun ready and immediately run around behind the APC, blasting the soldier who's nearby before he can start shooting you.
of 13: Then sprint on ahead until you reach the corner in the back.
of 13: I'm referring to the dark corner that's at the left end of the large "wall" of rubble that's back there.
of 13: Quickly jump onto the slanty rubble so you can get back behind the wall in the corner and be out of range of the antlions and soldiers. (Or instead of jumping, you can crouch-walk along the slanty rubble to get into the corner.)
of 13: NOTE: If you take way too much damage on your way there, quickrestore and try again, perhaps shooting more soldiers on the way. Or you could wait around near the drop-off point until the antlion guard finishes off the soldiers and APC, since it's easier to dodge his attacks than the soldiers' ranged attacks.
of 13: Once you're safely in the corner, you'll be able to tell that you're not supposed to be back there as you look and move around. Hopefully this isn't a glitch that'll be fixed later.
of 13: In the corner, you can crouch-walk to get back out onto the street, but don't do that yet -- Alyx will be shooting the antlion guard for you, and it'll probably be just sitting still in one spot and taking it.
of 13: You can try to get out to a good shooting position on top of the nearby rubble, but that may be a bit difficult due to the screwy you're-not-supposed-to-ever-be-here nature of the area.
of 13: If you get to where the antlion guard sees you and runs over, stay out of his head-butt range and watch out for him knocking things up at you.
of 13: You can now either help Alyx shoot the antlion guard, or just wait while she shoots him down for you. (Maybe help her out by shooting a few of the regular antlions before they can get to her.)
of 13: When the antlion guard dies, get back down to the street (by crouch-walking out of the corner if you can't drop down from on the rubble) and go plug the two antlion spawn-holes with the nearby cars.
