Half-Life 2: Episode One Hints
What's the best way to travel through this shaft?
of 12: Notice that the orbs are only being fired by the lower two orb-firers, and that they're fairly interspersed instead of in constant streams.
of 12: This implies that you can run down the shaft, dodging left and right to avoid orbs.
of 12: But that doesn't work hardly at all.
of 12: A much better strategy is to run down the left side of the shaft, jumping orbs as they approach.
of 12: It's fairly easy to make it to the doorway you need to go through that way, but you should try the old "hold a shield up in front of you" method for best results.
of 12: Go back to where you knocked that last panel cover off and bring it along with you.
of 12: NOTE: If you pulled it off from outside and then dropped it, you may have trouble getting it through the hole it was covering. If so, pick it up from one edge and take it through that way.
of 12: Hold the panel in front of you as a shield as you crouch-walk your way down the left side of the shaft.
of 12: You can't just hold it any old which-way this time, though.
of 12: Before you enter the shaft, pick it up, hold it high in the air so that it straightens out vertically, let go of it, then grab it again after it falls to where it's in front of you. That way you'll be holding it like a real full-body shield.
of 12: It can get knocked around all screwy very easily, though, so be careful not to bang it against the shaft's left wall.
of 12: In fact, it's best (though slowest) to hug the left wall while holding your shield a little off to the right instead of straight ahead of you. You'll have to keep crouch-walking a bit forward, then a bit left, then a bit forward, etc., but you should make it undamaged.
