The Orange Box: Half-Life 2: Episode Two Hints
Combine Trap Tips
of 19: Before the attack begins, start preparing the largest building's basement to be your base of operations.
of 19: After killing the poison headcrab in the basement (or letting Alyx do it), use the crates down there plus the ones on the ground floor to totally block one of the two sets of stairs that lead to the basement.
of 19: Then go get all of the supplies in the building and stockpile them near the blocked set of stairs.
of 19: You might also want to run back up the road to the first few buildings and bring their supplies (including explosives) down to the largest building.
of 19: Stockpile explosives and radiator grilles on the floor above the basement, near the large closed doors. That way, those items will be handy to use as gravity gun ammo when the hunters attack later.
of 19: After you do that, go outside and look for the stairs that lead down to the basement's side entrance door. You'll want to barricade that area now.
of 19: When you're all set, go over to where the trap triggers, then sprint straight for the basement, making sure Alyx comes down there with you.
of 19: If you wait in the basement long enough, soldiers will start coming down the stairs after you. (I hope you blockaded one set of stairs thoroughly enough with crates that the soldiers can't use both sets.)
of 19: If you get impatient, you could go up to the ground floor and break out a couple of windows to shoot soldiers through. Try to avoid taking very many hits, though, since you'll need your supplies to help you recover from a big hunter attack later on.
of 19: You could nudge Alyx up the stairs to where she'll shoot out through the windows for you. If you do, be sure to let her take refuge in the basement (or partway down the stairs) every now and then so her health can regenerate.
of 19: When you hear several hunters clunking around nearby, and Alyx asks "Did you hear that?", follow her to a spot on the ground floor where a hunter is about to drop in through a high-up window. (NOTE: This happens right after you kill two white Combine elite soldiers.)
of 19: Quickly start shooting the hunter before it drops down, preferably with the crossbow, then back off for some cover.
of 19: NOTE: If you got the pulse rifle energy orb from the supply stash earlier, you can use it for a quick one-shot kill on this hunter. To make sure you don't miss, you might want to wait until right after it drops down to fire your orb.
of 19: If you didn't orb-blast it, keep ducking out of cover and shooting it until it's dead, then immediately run over to the windows that overlook the side entrance to the basement.
of 19: If you blocked it with car debris earlier, you can take several free shots at the hunter who's trying to get past the debris (and maybe the third hunter too, before he moves on).
of 19: Watch for the third hunter to break through some large doors near those windows, and switch your attention to him when you have to.
of 19: Use the gravity gun ammo you have stockpiled nearby to quickly kill that hunter, then go see if the other one is still trying to get into the basement.
of 19: If so, you might be able to shoot it before it gets in. Otherwise, wait for it to appear inside the building and come over to your gravity gun ammo stockpile, where you can finish it off quickly.
of 19: NOTE: You can use RPG rockets on these hunters, but I'd advise you to save two rockets for later.
