The Orange Box: Half-Life 2: Episode Two Hints

General Strider Attack Information

  • 1 of 14: Every strider will appear at one of three northern locations and make its way down south toward the White Forest base. See the Valley Map for the exact strider entry locations.
  • 2 of 14: Your goal is to destroy every strider before it can reach the base and blow up the rocket.
  • 3 of 14: There's no infinite RPG rocket crate around, and very few spare rocket launchers to get more ammo from, so you'll need to use Magnusson's sticky bombs to take the striders down.
  • 4 of 14: You start with one sticky bomb on the back of your car, and you get more sticky bombs from the dispenser ports that are scattered about the region.
  • 5 of 14: To destroy a strider with a sticky bomb, do just like you did on the practice range in the previous chapter section.
  • 6 of 14: Throw a sticky bomb with the gravity gun so that it hits and sticks to a strider's main body, then quickly switch to another weapon and shoot the bomb so it'll explode, killing the strider instantly.
  • 7 of 14: There are several major problems with this, including the fact that the strider will probably be shooting at you, especially after you hit it with a sticky bomb.
  • 8 of 14: Also, most striders have one to three hunters escorting them, and there aren't enough pulse rifle energy orbs around to kill off all the hunters that way. (Though there are orbs in supply buildings 3 and 4, and they get restocked occasionally.)
  • 9 of 14: Not only do the hunters make themselves annoying by shooting at you, but they'll also target sticky bombs, somehow knowing that they need to destroy those in order to help protect their strider.
  • 10 of 14: It's usually best to finish off a strider's hunter escort before you try sticky-bombing it. It is possible to sticky-bomb a strider while hunters are still around, but it's much harder.
  • 11 of 14: Yet another problem is that when you stick a bomb to a strider that isn't facing you, it'll often turn to start shooting at you, making it very hard to hit the bomb and explode it with bullets. In cases like this, you'll want to fire an RPG rocket at the strider if you have one.
  • 12 of 14: Further complicating the issue is that not every strider will wait for the previous one to be destroyed before it appears. Sometimes they appear in groups of two or more, and they each usually have hunters escorting them.
  • 13 of 14: The four supply buildings are spaced out so that you can drive over to supplies and sticky bomb dispenser ports fairly quickly from anywhere in the valley. (Note, though, that the sawmill and two northern supply buildings will be blasted by striders at various points unless you can stop them.)
  • 14 of 14: The resistance guys will occasionally put new items in the supply buildings, so don't totally ignore a building after getting all of its supplies -- there may be more later.
